Driving from LV to West Rim includes 10 miles unpaved road, very bad to cars. Then you need to take their bus to the Skywalk (really no way to walk). Total fee will be around $80 per person.
I haven't been to South Rim myself, but have heard that the view is much better there and worth staying overnight. I think it depends on if you have little kids; they may be too young to appreciate the views and may feel bored.
I would recommend taking day-trip bus tour to Grand Canyon.

I don't remember if parking is included. I guess it is free. But yes minimal charge to get on Skywalk is $80 per head (entrance fee to the area and hop on-and-off shuttle).
Day bus-tour is about $140-$150 per head with Skywalk.
I'm doing research for my relatives visiting from HK, that's why I know. I recommend them taking bus day trip also. No need to drive -- 4 hours one way from Vegas to Skywalk and 4 hours back!! I did it a few years ago. We had 6 people and a very tight budget, so we drove on our own. But if budget allows, strongly recommend joining bus tour.
