My nanny resigned so we need to find a new nanny. I called the agency and they told me to give $450/week for 6 days. I didn't know it's that expensive now. Do you know what is the normal rate to work 6 days? Is there a diff in pay for live-in or not? I only have one 3.5 yrs old girl who goes to 1/2 day school. Thanks!!

shamom,
if i were you , i would definitely put an ad on singtao. $1800 for a month is definitely too much for just 1 kid. i would think the average now should be about 1400-1500. and that's for live in. if chloe is in school maybe you could consider hiring a part time to pick her up after school and cook for about half the price of live in. good luck!

Alison & Cross-stichma,

Wow $500/month is totally not affordable! I also need to pay for Chloe's 1/2 day dare care now(Sept will be free when she goes pre-k). I am interviewing a nanny tonight let's see what she wants. I will start with $1400.

Do you know if I go vacation, is it a common practice to pay her full? Or it's ok to just pay 1/2 or no pay? How about when she takes days off? I want to treat the nanny nice but don't want to be taken advantage.

Thanks for all your help. I want to tell nanny up front about the terms, so I won't be frustrated later. I think my nanny leaves because I didn't give her a raise after 1.5 yrs of work. Also I didn't give her one week vacation...but I pay her when I had my 4 weeks vacation...don't know how to keep nanny...so much headache when they leave.

Shamom,
no paid vacation, maybe one day in chinese new year. if you r on vacation and u need her to stay home of cuz you have to pay her in full. if she asks for a raise on interview then go for another one. chloe is big enough and she could tell you if the ee is good or not.

Hi Shamom,

In the bayarea where I live (San Francisco, California),
5 days/week live-in is about $1200+, and 6 days/week live-in is about $1400+. One of my clients paid $1600/mo for her live-in who just worked 5 days a week.

I had a live-in nanny for a little over 2 years and we paid her $1400 a month for 6 days. We didn't give her a raise because her duty was changed in the last year.

If the family goes on vacation, of course you have to pay her regular salary. On the other hand, there will be no pay if the nanny asks for days off. Our nanny had days off when there's public holiday.

Hope you find this helpful!

I interviewed 2 nannies last night. They were introduced by nanny agency. The first one she seems like a nice lady and should be easy to get along. But she was "vibrating" her feet all time during the interview. That makes me quite worry since that may be a sign she is not a polite person... The second one demands a lot. First she wants $1820. Then she tells me she cannot deal with picky people and she cannot sleep late. To me she looks like a picky person. So both nanny are not best choice... I need to keep looking... Thanks for the advice MeeeMeee and Alison!
