You can try the city or near city area. Now the rent is coming down. If you want to rent a condo with swimming facility...etc. $3000+ can rent a place with around 1000sqft. I recently also make some research on newspaper here.
Many condo like River Valley or Tiong Bahru area 3room : 3K +;
These two place have bus to mariana square.
You can try to go to the website of http://www.singaporeexpats.com/ , then type district 09 or 10, there are lots of choice you can see.
