You are not exempted from written or driving test in NSW. You can drive the car using the international licence for 3 months.

If you are not a holiday driver in HK, then you can pass the driving te ...

no, if you have a driver licence in HK or another country for more than 3 years, you can exempt from either the wrttien or driving tests. You can automatic get a driver licence in NSW, no need to take any exam; however, they will punch a hole in your hk driver licence, so that when you back to hk you need to renew your driver licence.

I am pretty sure about it, because i used this way to apply my driver licence in NSW. Once, you get a driver licence in any stare in australia, you can automatic to get another driver licence in another state.

Really? then if my hubby got over 3 years in HK, he doesn't need to pass any test to get a driving license in OZ but simply to pay for it in OZ? but why do they punch a hole on it and need to renew again in HK as the license was issued by HK government?

How about if my license is below 1 year?

When did you get your Oz license?
As I know the holder of HK license cannot get any exemption now. The only advantage is they can get "Full license" instead of " license" if their HK license is more than 10 years and 1 take pass in driving test here. I was told by my friend who did the driving test here recently and still hold the HK license

That's right, as far as I know, there is no more exemption!! Anyone who holds an oversea license can drive for the first three months after they landed for immigration. Then they must take both written and driving test to get the Australian license in order to drive after three months. The only advantage is a full license will be issued if they pass instead of P license.

DID THEY CHANGE THE RULE?? I GOT IT IN 2002!!

THEY PUNCH THE HOLE BECAUSE THEY WANT TO MAKE SURE YOU ARE ONLY HOLDING ONE LICENCE IN OZ.

I just did my written & driving test at the beginning of this year. They did not punch any hole on my HK license. I am still keeping both my HK and OZ driving license. I believe they changed the rules! But I did everything in VIC and I am not sure other states are doing the same thing or not.

last time they punched the hole in my hk driver licence, because i used it to apply for the nsw driver licence. Last time I didn't need to take any exam. I guessed in your case you were not usying the hk driver licence to replace your vic driver licence, that y they didn't need to punch a hole in your driver licence.

i found some information about the exemption in NSW. Yes, certainly we can exempt from the test:

Exemptions from licence testsYou may not be required to pass a car knowledge test or practical driving test if:
  • You have previously held an Australian driver licence that expired within the last five years and it can be verified by the issuing authority,
  • You hold a current New Zealand driver licence (not a New Zealand learner licence or paper licence), or
  • You are applying for a car licence and you hold a current overseas licence (not a learner licence), or one that expired within the last five years, from a country recognised as having comparable licensing standards to Australia.
  • And those countries include:

Recognised countries
  • Austria, Belgium, Canada, Croatia, Denmark,
  • Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Guernsey,
  • Ireland, Isle of Man (licences issued since 1 April 1991), Italy, Japan, Jersey, Luxembourg,
  • Malta (licences issued since 2 January 2004), Netherlands, New Zealand (except where a paper licence is presented), Norway, Portugal,
  • Singapore, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, United Kingdom, USA.

sorry guys, hk is not in the list. I apply my NSW driver licence because I was using my USA's driver licence, not the HK's. Sorry...

wrong memory!!
