Hello,

Anyone moving to Melbourne soon? We have planned to move to Melbourne in 2011 for our children's education. As we have no connection down there, we have to start everything from scratch. If any family is in the same situation, perhaps we can form a group for info sharing and support when moving there? Please get in touch. Cheers.

Hey, sorry due to some unknown technical reason/problem with the forum, I thought my yesterday's post with the same title was not successful as I did not see the post when I logged in today. But just now...it is there!

Thanks Tina. My DH would like our children (10 & 9 now) to receive their HS education in Australia. There seems to be good nonselective government HS in Melbourne and with its lower cost of housing, it is our target city to move to, but we do not have any connection there. So its a bit daunting for me to be alone with the kids in a city that I hardly know as DH will be working back in HK to support. Anyway we have set our eyes on rentals near North Melbourne or Balwyn, basically for the HS in the neighbourhood. We mainly do the search on internet. Any recommendation or advice is deeply appreciated. Lisa.

Hi Lisa,

Many families like you also move to Melbourne for kids' education.

Balywn High School is a popular one among government schools.

Balywn, Glen Waverley, Doncaster and Box Hill etc are hot places for migrants.

I don't know much about North Melbourne though.

If you're solely moving for education, you may just focus in finding your favorite school but no need to consider house pricing and distance to work etc.

But you may still better contact your target school checking for places to avoid disappointment. There are cases of full house in these highly sought after government schools too.

I heard that there are some publications about Good School Guide etc for purchase. You may search internet for that.

There may be other moms can help providing more information?

Cheers,
Tina

Have you heard anything bad about North Melbourne/inner fringe of West Melbourne, Tina? We heard Uni High is a good public HS too. Any idea? DH is saying Canterbury Girl has a strong academic record. Do you know any good school near that school as we have a boy too? We are thinking of enrolling our girl into a HS Yr 7 for 2012, but we will move to Melbourne in 2011 June when she will do the second half of Yr 6 in a primary school, will it be too late to get a place for HS entry for the following year?

BTW do you reckon it is worthwhile to ship over furniture and electrical appliances if the shipment itself cost some $HK40,000 (according to another thread)? Sorry for that many questions. Lisa.

I don't have friends living in N. Melbourne or W. Melbourne, but all inner CBD area is kind of more expensive for less living space.

If you merely come for education, little apartment may be ok for your big kids. Otherwise, some parents may want to provide more space for kids to play and to have a different lifestyle than in HK; e.g. less busy streets and neighbourhood, indoor playroom, outdoor living space, a backyard, a garden etc. All depends on your rating of various aspects of life.

Outer subrubs in where popular government schools located, you will expect to see higher rent for smaller houses too.

But what I know from friends who have kids studying in some top government schools; the academic standard is still far behind HK ones ( if you're looking for academic performances). You still have to give them extra exercises and studies to catch up with HK (if you want).

Also, government schools all receive similar rate of fundings and resources. The difference is mainly from the students. Schools got more asian students generally achieve higher academic results. It's a loops that you can see; schools get higher marks, more parents (especially asian) put their kids in.

My kid's only 3 years old. So I don't know much about the school entry time and levels yet.

Hope it helps a little bit.

Tina

About shipping stuff from HK, many families do so. But many of them just keep the boxes in storeroom for years... . You need to consider what you really need. Furnitures and electronics are more expensive in Aus. You may need to do a calculation if it worths the 40k shipping fee.

Hi DLPapa,

Yes, Melbourne is good for kids' education.
My kid & parents also live in East Doncaster.
I lived in Balywn North before when we migranted to Melbourne and studied in Balywn High School. That school in that time was quiet good, but now( I cannot said it's better than before). My parents rented in Balywn North for one year . Then we moved to East Doncaster. In town, there's a lot of people from Hong Kong. But quiet nice & safety place to live. My daughter is studying in Sperbell primary school in grade 5 now. That school is very good.
I don't think we need to study privacy school, quiet expensive.

Hi all,

we are also plan to go MEL next year, but I have a few questions see if anyone can help.

my husband got a citizenship, and of course my 2 daughters, but I have to apply PR first in HK, does anyone knows more details if I apply it in HK?? Would it be more easy to apply in MEL instead?

My 2 daughters one is 2 & 5 this year, and I know that the prep school is only allow 5 years old before april, therefore she will miss the prep school and directly go to Grade 1, do you think is the gov primary school willing to accept the children not speak fluent english. Or is there any suggestion that she could study a special class for english?

I just found one school in Malvern, "Malvern Central School" is it good?

If the application of PR takes really long time, so maybe I need to apply by the end of Dec this year.

Thank you.

Hello 砵砵豬,

Your situation is exactly the same as ours. The kids and I are citizens, but wife is not. I submitted a migrant application for her and the process was quite straight forward. The interview was performed on the same day and approval was granted in about 2-3 months. The biggest problem we are trying to fix is how to arrange an accommodation for the big move. Different temp accommodation types have pros and cons, and surely I do not want too much hassle for my wife as I need to come back to HK to settle things afterwards. PM me for more sharing etc if desired. Cheers.

Hi Tina,

I will move to Melbourne end of this year, but I know nothing there, can I ask you some questions? My son is 2 years old, and he needs to go to Kindergarten next year. Our big problem now is looking for school and apartment at the same time.

Would you kindly tell me which suburb with more better kindergartens that I can choose? Then, I will concentrate to look for apartments at those suburbs.

Thanks a lot!!
Ling

Hi tsl0511,

Kindergarten starts at 4 years old here in Australia.

For 3 years old, you can choose to put your son in childcare center for preschool program. Some kindergartens do provide 3 year old kinder programs BUT it's full fee charged, without government funding.

Kinders here are more or less the same, as they all fun according to government standards; mostly emphasis in Learning through Play.

If you want to find primary schools, you may check myschool.edu.au . Or check the government websites.

But remember, from where you've found "good" schools, the areas would be more popular and more expensive for living. You need to balance your affordability and school preferences carefully.

Good luck!

Tina
