can anyone share how they start solid?
ie when to start? how many times a day?
when to feed during the day? lunch or dinner?
eat rice powder for how long before starting congee?

here is my boy current milk schedule (he will be 5 months in about 2wk time) 5 milk a day each 7oz

1) 830am
2) 12noon
3) 330pm
4) 7pm
5) 1030pm

it will be great if anyone can share their experience

i didnt remember much when mitch started solid food. i think he was about 5months old coz he is prematured (some ppl start around 4months, some even start when the baby is 3 months old, remember i am talking about england here), i didnt want him to start early since his body wasnt fully development as other 5 months old baby!

at that time, i gave him a full teaspoon baby rice to make with his milk to start with, for his lunch! then he ate for a week, then i added extra meal for his tea (so 2 meals in a day)! then added extra spoon for the following week ( i dont fully remember it, so sorry!!!) i think for the 4th week, i started carrot, apple, butternut squash, pear, banana, broccolli, sweet potatos etc.. all those made with baby rice as well (about 1ice-cube each). and had to take 1 food for 3 days in a row to make sure he wasnt allergy with it!!!!! could mix and match in between (i mean if the baby didnt feel sick with food A, then food A can mix with the food B)

i didnt give him any congee when he was young, coz firstly i wasnt a good cooker, secondly i wasnt active in any mummy forum, i hadnt had an idea what i should do, so i bought baby food jar instead!! hehhee...

when should the baby start solid? all ppl said.. if the baby can sleep through the night, and suddenly wake up for the bottle in the middle of night, that mean the baby is ready for it or if the baby is interested what u are eating, that mean he/she is ready as well!!!!!

all above is my experenice with mitch, actually u can ask ur health visitor when u go to baby clinic. there is a baby clinic every 2 weeks in my place, so dont know if it is same as urs!!!!

To supplement hk30's notes on when to start: if BB has already taken more than 1000ml a day and his weight gain slow down - this is also an indication to start weaning.

My BB started solid just after 5 months old. I gave him babyrice at his lunch time feed (according to my health visitor, giving him in the afternoon is good as we can have the rest of the day to check if he has any allergic reaction to the food). Get his milk ready as usual. Put some babyrice (probably 1 teaspoons of babyrice) and mix with 20 ml of milk (check the instructions on the packing as I remember it was a little runny and suitable to start with). Sit him up a little bit or use the car seat so that he is not lying flat. Give him the babyrice first, when done. Give him the rest of the milk. Try for a few days with different thickness to see how he likes it. You can then increase his babyrice intake and graduall replace the whole meal with solid.
From my experience, babyrice is more filling and I think when my BB has babyrice mix up to about 100ml of milk (when he has about 150-180ml per meal), he is already full up and doesn't need a milk feed afterwards.
After a couple of days and you think BB is happy with babyrice, can give him mash banana, puree apple as tea time snacks, porridge and cereals for breakfast. For lunch, can puree sweet potatoe, parsnip, carrots, pumpkin for him to try different tastes and textures. There are loads of things to try at different times of the day for different meals, just try one at a time and mix and match when you're sure he is not allergy to the food you give him.
My BB has babyrice until he is about 7 months old and I started giving him congee. He has been on congee & mash potatoes since then.

fran, congee is a very chinese thing la...so if you've not talked to HK mums you might not know it lor. Hubby thinks I give too much congee to Carlos. Well, we're Chinese and Chinese eat rice, don't we???

yeah, i should cook him congee at that time. how did u cook congee then? i mean how big pot congee were u cooking at that time?? just a small pot every day? or cook for 2 days sth like that???? and normally what did u put??? (but my supermarket doesnt like urs, got chinese veg)

梗係多啦，而家糊仔未可以當一餐o架，奶仲係嘅主要食嘅嘢..................

I soak the rice overnight in water in the fridge. Congee is not good (in terms of nutritional value/taste) if it is left overnight. I cook every meal ~ I feel guilty that Carlos is not eating properly when I am at work so I rather do fresh for him every meal (so yes, sometimes it means 2 times a day!). Difficult to do a small serving so I always do more (like the size of an instant noodle bowl) and I finish the leftovers afterwards.

I usually do the plain congee, mince up chicken meat and add it to the congee when it is about to be ready. If I do fish, I steam the fish in a steamer and sort the bones and put it on the table and mix it to the congee when feeding Carlos. Also, I will boil some greens to go with the meal. Very simple and boring...

When I'm too tired or lazy, I will use Stage 1 babyfood jar to mix with congee (like a gravy). And I will ask C6 to feed him babyfood jar or mash potatoes when I'm not home cooking for Carlos [but as I mentioned before, he always picks the wrong type of jars...and he just did it again this morning and poor Carlos finished 1/2 Stage 1 jar only ~聽到好心痛 )

I think as Mitch is older, perhaps you can try doing a sweetcorn & chicken congee for him. As sweetcorn is sweet, he might like it and it is easy to do as well. Just boil everything on a low fire until the rice is soft. Add some shredded
iceberg lattice for a good crunch. I will definitely do this for Carlos when he is older as I like any kind of congee!!!

i dont think mitch likes the crunch food although he is 2 years old. he just likes a baby, and i think he is lazy to chew the food!! so sometimes i rather to blend the food for him, then at least he might be eating it! otherwise properly just only a couple mounths only! or maybe coz of my poor cooking, he doesnt like it, thats why he chose not eating!!

will u cook any english food for carlos then?
