i think focusing on language(s) your little one would have a chance to use is best.
my hubby is partially dutch and i have french and tibetan blood. (bigger parts of us chinese, me and him both =P)obviously my daughter will have little to probably no chance to use dutch or french before long(and i doubt she'll meet a tibetan person later in life), so we just dont even think of using those languages in front of her.
we are using cantonese and english in front of our daughter, i hope for her to enter an international school because i plan to move back to england later when she's finish grammar school.
i understand being of chinese background and wanted to teach the little fellow the old mother-tongue. but if the little guy(gal) can't use it in life, what good does it make anyway?
and something else, i really hate it when my inlaws "talk" to my baby using their languages(mandarin, indonesian... dialects from dunno where). geez!! isn't it confusing enough with the english and chinese already?!!
