just wondering what'll be taught in the Mandarin class for the 4-yr-olds in Macau?

i've enrolled my boy into a 2-hour Mandarin Chinese class on Saturdays. initially i was told it's not required for the kids to understand Mandarin before the class starts (becoz some other classes do). however, most kids speak Mandarin, except for my boy and another kid., becoz there're lots of Taiwanese and people from Mainland China in that area. The parents already complained to the teacher that she speaks too much English.
initially the teacher spoke abt 30% English and 70% Mandarin for the first lesson, and then abt 20% English for the second lesson.

for the 1st class, they were taught the numbers from 1 to 10. for the 2nd class, they were taught the different between "人" and "八", "大" and "小" and the different colors.

my boy seems not enjoying the class. before we went to the chinese school this morning, he already said he doesn't wanna go. in the chinese class, he's not paying attention and sometimes ran out the classroom by himself. however, when i asked him if he still wanna go to the chinese school next week, he said yes (becoz the teacher gave him a little tiny gift when the class was over).

so i'm thinking if i should keep letting him going to the chinese school or not, coz i'm a little afraid that it might turn off his interest in learning chinese later.

it really seems a bit too much, and a bit boring for your boy. They are using traditional Chinese methods to teach, which your boy is not familiar at all. He is used to the interactive way in his school, right? In my opinion, don't let him go anymore, I am sure he will be scared and will hate Chinese very soon, if he keeps on going there. It happened to my cousins in Canada as well. If you know Chinese, I think it's better for you to teach him by yourself. You can teach him some Chinese poems first~ It's easier, and more interesting~

At home, you can use the way kids learn English as second language, print out words like門, 窗, 床, etc and stick them around the house~

Hope it can help you~ ^-^

thanks for yr suggestion. however, both my husband and i had never learned mandarin. i can speak conversational mandarin if needed, but i don't want to teach my boy inaccurate ponounciation. moreover, my boy never listens to me (my complete failure). he only listens to his dad.

speaking of 唐詩, the teacher has also taught them the poem of 床前明月光 (in mandarin). i can't believe it. maybe she just want them to explore and listened to it.

initially i was told that it's not required for the kids to understandMandarin and i thought it were a fun class acccording to what theprincipal described to me. well ... actually they also had singing andmovement; however, maybe becoz they didn't move the desks/chairs in thehigh school classroom they rented, all the 4-yr-olds have to sit at thedesks for 2 hrs (with 10 mins break in between). also, i realized that2/3 of the class are girls and only abt 1/3 are boys, and most of theboys don't pay attention too much to the teacher even though theyunderstand Mandarin.

well ... we've already paid for one whole yr's tuition and last weeksupposed to be the last date to refund. but we just enrolled him lastweek so not sure if we can get a refund.
meanwhile, when my mother-in-law (who also barely knows Mandarin) asked my boy toteach her what are those charaters that he learned, he's able to tellher although the ponounciation is not 100% accurate. and when sheasked him if he likes going to the chinese school next week, he saidyes.
my mother-in-law implied that we should let him try until he's not interested. he always changes his mind ...
