I posted a message to the Any mom lives in USA now (part 6) forum a couple times, but not sure why it's not showing. Anyway maybe it's good to start a new topic for moms (and dads) who has an asthmatic child at home and share our experience.

Besides croc meat, 椰子燉田雞 is also good for asthma.
Ingredients:
1 old coconut (the brown ones, not 椰青)
1 frog (fresh is better than frozen)
1 tiny slice of ginger

Steps:
1. Get the juice of the coconut out (there are 3 dots on the top of the coconut, use a clean screw driver to break 2 of the dots and let out the juice into a bowl)
2. Cut the top of the coconut off with a saw (my c6 bought an electrical saw just for this because it’s really hard to do it manually)
3. Clean the frog and cut it into a few pieces
4. Put the frog and ginger into the coconut
5. Filter the juice and put it back to the coconut (there will be some leftover juice since the frog has taken some space)
6. Put back the top of the coconut. Basically you are using the coconut as a 燉盅。
7. 燉 2 hours

The soup tastes good and it’s much cheaper than croc meat. But it’s hard to find good coconut and prepare it as a燉盅. Many coconuts in the grocery stores are 發mo. Also it’s rather scary to prepare the frog (I’m more used to it now, but still…), but it works pretty well. A couple of my cousins on my father side also had asthma, but they drank the soup from Oct to Feb for two years in a row when they were a kid. They haven’t had any asthma attack since then (they are now in their late 20’s). So I guess it’s 斷尾.

My 4-year old boy also has asthma. He drank 1/3 bowl of the soup every day last winter and last spring. Depending on the size of coconut, we prepare the soup once every 3-5 days. We are giving him the soup again this winter. He’s very easy to get a cold and will cough forever. We need to give him inhaled steroid and albuterol (in some cases he even needs oral steroid). This year I notice that he coughs much less and recovers faster. I don’t think the soup really cures or stops the cough, but instead it helps to make the 氣管stronger and less sensitive to cold air and cold drinks, etc. Try it out!

Thanks Mrschao to open this forum! I can learn a lot from u and others! I believe we chatted before in other forums but cannot remember whether your son had the experience of using Pulmicort?

My 2 year old daughter Karina just had bronchitis and then a bad asthma attack last week :-( :-( :-( So heart broken to see her suffer! She was prescribed with Xopenex, oral steriod and antibiotics. Lucky it's over now (but poor baby brother Justin got the germ and has diarrhea and cough :-( :-( :-( )

Karina's doc always pushes us to use Pulmicort but I really not want her to be on daily steriod. What's your son experience?

Thanks also for the receipt. I will ask my hubby to see if he can find coconut this weekend.

One thing, I myself had asthma also when I was little, but the medication/ approach is so diff from nowadays! I out-grew it already, but I still keep the inhaler handy just to protect myself.

Hi culver,

Yes I think we chatted in the "studying overseas" forum before.

So how are your kids now? Hope they feel better. You have to take care of yourself too! Taking care of an asthmatic child is like a long term battle. We can support each other!!

I haven't used Pulmicort before. My son is prescribed Qvar which is a steriod inhalor. The doctor suggested us to use it on my son (also named Justin) twice a day for the entire winter. We did it last year, but we are not using it this winter as I mentioned Justin is so far so good this year. I also hesitate to give him steriod on a regular basis, but I was told the inhaled version is much better than the oral form in terms of side effect. Plus the oral steriod tastes really awful, even mixed with yogurt or chocolate syrup. So maybe you'd better listen to the doc to use it on Karina to prevent her from getting any more asthma attack. You know, asthma attack can be life-threatening!

My father side family has the history of asthma, luckily I don't have it, but unfortunately it's passed to my son. In my family, boys are easier to have it. Not sure about yours. Anyway, be extra careful with your baby Justin. It might be easy for him to get it too. Hope they all get well very soon to have a happy holiday!!

Mrschao,

Thanks, I know I have to keep myself healthy in order to take care of my 2 kids. Last week I slept for maybe 3-4 hours per night. This week is a little bit better because Karina recovered already. Baby brother Justin has diarrhea for more than 1 week. The doc cannot do anything for that, but I heard that using soy-base formula may help, so I will try.

For your Justin, do you use allergen free cover for his bed? I will investigate that for Karina, just don't know if they have toddler bed size or not. ?-(

When I have more time later, I can tell u my own asthma experience, having it is like a long battle, however u will win one day.

culver,

No, I don't have allergen free cover for Justin. Does it really work?

You must be very disciplined to fight asthma. My dad has it since he was a little kid, he is over 50 years old now and still has it. Because he insists on drinking cold drinks, eating cold fruits, don't exercise....

So you have first hand experience with asthma yourself and must be miserable to see your daughter suffering from the same thing.

mrschao,

talking abt asthma, i have a friend whose toddler boy had really bad asthma attack that he's passed out for a few minutes and been hospitalized for a few days. i felt really bad abt him coz he's always sick since he was in day-care, so eventually my friend had to quit her job temporarily to take care of him full time. but now his asthma is gone after he's seen a chinese herbal doctor in SF for a few months. (see my discussion with rose-mag in the Bay Area Mom topic).

alisonli,

actually i don't know anything abt chinese herbs. neither does my mom and 99.

if u're interested in chinese herbal remedy for asthma, u should look for a reliable chinese herbal doctor in yr area. i bet there should be lots of choices in NY area.

amazingly, my friend's kid (2-yr-old now)'s asthma was completely healed after he's seen a chinese herbal doctor for a few months. she even didn't know what he's taken, coz the doctor's not willing to disclosure the formula. she just gave all the pediatric patients medicines in powder so u don't know what's in it.

SY-mom, alisonli,

There is nothing like "completely healed" in term of asthma, the best we can do is have it well under control. Like myself, I have not had an attack for quite some years, however, I still bring my albuterol puff with me.

When I was a kid, I was brought to see so many diff kinds of doc, western or Chinese ones. I once also had some "Chinese herbal powder tablets" as medicine. I cannot remember how well they controlled my asthma. However, the thing is, u don't know what's inside, u certainly don't know what side effect it will bring. Also there is high lead in many Chinese herbs. As u mentioned, u need to find a reliable Chinese doc in the first place.

Don't misinteprete me as somebody who don't believe in Chinese medicine. Actually I would love to study it, just that we have to be very careful on how to use it effectively.

Mrschao,

Karina had the allergy test and she is allergic to dust mites, that's why I am thinking of the bed mat cover. I will investigate into it since there's an allergy product shop nearby my place.

For myself with the condition for so many years, I know some combinations will trigger the attack. e.g. cold weather + cold drink + stress. So if I can avoid 2 out of 3 factors, then I know I am quite safe.... It really takes discipline (and experience) to work, that's why it's so difficult to be an asthmatic kids...

culver,

after having seen the same chinese herbal doctor, a friend's kid's asthma was under control and another friend's kid's eczema was under control. i also have the same concern as u don't know what exactly yr kid is taking. however, they both don't care abt it that much now as their asthma and eczema been healed although they also had the same concern at the very beginning.

my son's eczema been bothering him and kept him wake up almost every night. it's been 4 yrs now. my friend couldn't even wait to give her eczema baby the chinese herb when he's only 4 to 5 months old.

asthma is even more terrible, coz it could be life-threatening. so my another friend couldn't wait to give her 18-month-old baby the chinese herb after he had a couple of serious asthma attacks.

culver, before Justin was diagnosed with asthma, he also did a skin test and the allergy specialist found nothing. But it was also this specialist heard Justin had some wheezing sound for the very firwst time. So it was good that we brought him to see this specialist. Justin just started to cough again these couple days. I have to put him back on the inhaler. Hope he will get well soon.

I know that cold weather and cold drink will trigger asthma. I didn't know that stress can too. That's good to know. But as a mother of two, it's rather hard for you to be not stressed bor.

SY_mom, I can understand why the parents are willing to risk even if they are not sure what's in the chinese medicine. Maybe if Justin was really desperate, I would do the same too. But for kids under 2 years old, that's really dangerous. I agree with you that you need to find a very trustful doctor in the first place.
