You better go to try the focusing speed of both cameras. A test done indoor should be good enough. The whole point for DSLR is SPEED, but some brand's focusing speed may not impress you.
Buying DSLR is buying a system, not just 1 body. I found support (means lens choices, flash system, user group, 2nd hand market, not just after sales service) for both Canon and Nikon somehow is better than it's competitors in the market.
Finally, if you have any friends who are using DSLR and they are willing to share/ lend their lens to you, go for a same brand as them! It can save you a lot of money.
