I do not have this experience, but I think that it is the same as my company rented a unit from the landlord company.
Last year we need to return one unit back to the landlord as we rent several units in the same floor; the landlord asked us to reinstate to the original status, i.e. for the door changed to glass door needed to be returned back to the original timber door, relocate back the fire services hose reel, etc....
I think that if you have alter the layout, alter the electrical socket, a/c etc, you need to reinstate.
For the painting or so, it should be subject to wear and tears.
