Either u extend the stay in hk or u bring him to Macau and then back to hk for another 3-month stamp. Go to mainland will work too if he already has china visa.
Longest is 6 months actually (for visitor). The custom will ask the visitor how long he/she wants to stay this time, if you answer 4 to 6 months, usually they will give a 6 months stamp in the passport. One time my mom answer visit for 2 months and they also give her 6 months stamp. Actually, every time she gets 6 month stamp no matter what she reply. You can go to Canada or Mexico and then re-enter for another stamp or apply for extension with a good reason. But I heard if you apply for extension, then next time they may ask more question or don't give out 6 months stamp as easy... Depends on the situation. Also may not be good to go to US very soon after the extension visit if there is no valid reason.
