Hi all,

睇過你地介紹Tad Williams的The Otherland, 我即刻就去amazon睇左幾頁, 但提不起我的興趣。反而偶然搵到本"Death on the Nile" by Agatha Christine. 現在在圖書館book左。

Dear all,

I tried to read the English books or functions to enhance my English skill, such as Harry Porter Vol. 1 and Falling Leaf (talking about the Chinese lady from a rich family and her life from Shanghai to US, is a real case) but find more nouns that I can't understand. Some of them will be guessed the meaning, some of them will be found from dictionary. Later on, I give up to read.

So I admire all of you can read more and more English books.

I think you should choose books written in more simple English first. If you have to find in the dictionary to understand the story, you will lost interest very soon. It's my experience.

Find books not too thick and words printed in bigger size, those usually for young adults, which should be easier to understand. Actually, Harry Potter is a very difficult book to read if you are a elementary reader. The author 玩弄文字. She is a good writer but the English is too complicated for me, I suppose.

I encourage you to try again.

各位書友, 孩子要開學啦! 以後會比較少上網. 不過你們要繼續推荐好書.

多謝各位介紹過的好書. 希望能夠在年尾前讀完.

小奇媽. Tad Williams 網頁我上過啦. 雖然他的小說題材不大合我口味. 不過我會試下讀一本, 看他能否把我狹窄讀書口味擴闊. 以前我想我也不會喜歡哈利波特魔法故事. 點知不知不覺把它五集看完. 還覺得好睇.

Harry potter其實真係好好睇

或者我本身偏好巫術的故事，至於文字方面，我都覺得有好多字眼真是好難明（如咒語），佢本身有些網頁專門解說書中字眼，至於文句理解方面又不是太困難，比較起一些文學作品，作者沒有賣弄文筆，算易明啊！不如先看中文，後看英文，會否好一點？

對於Harry Potter 睇完中文才睇英文的提議唔錯喎！我有個朋友都係咁做, 佢話會易明好多架！之前我都唔記得tim.

很多年前教英國文學的老師給了我們一點意見.她說除非看英文書的目的是學英文,或者好像我們當年要考試,否則一般閱讀不太適宜每字番查字典,因為這樣絕對會影響閱讀的興頭,而且因為太費時失事,很容易看不下去.結果反而不能把書看完.

她的提議是,只查那些嚴重影響理解的字,換句話說,只查那些比較關鍵的字眼.而事實上當你看一本書看得有一段時間,結合各人物的性格,故事的發展等等背景後,很有機會會猜到某些字的粗略意思.(尤其是作者通常在用字時都有自己的習憤和偏好,某些字會經常出現)這樣就可兼顧理解和進度的問題.

我都係讀書o個陣先查多d字典, 因為那是學習的階段,要認識多d詞彙意思--這是讀書

依家好少好少查, 其實,你都估到,不是我英文特別好,每本書一字一句都明白,而係你只係追情節,故事,享受緊又不是學英文-------唔知講得對不對, 不過,有時,見到一d好似完全未見過的字眼,我都會捧著字典查,又會講出聲,算是唔比自己英文退步的方法,因為,畢業以後,工作太忙,沒有認真去過進修 :-P

至於Harry Potter則不同

我實在太喜歡喇，我當然要深入研究啦……不知大學ｎ年後，有沒有人以此作為論文題材

Reading "The Otherland" could be difficult. As I said before, the plot is very complicated. You need to be patient before the linkage between individual thread is revealed.

It starts with a soilder climbing up a tree that grow up to the sky and found a fairy there (I thought it was a fairy tale and almost give up reading the book, I am glad I hadn't);

a boy suffered from 早衰症 who can only find his identity when he is playing the hero in a role play game;

an assistant lecturer teaching computer knowledge to an aboriginal student;

a middle-aged woman suffered from headache occasionally;

and there is a mysterious old man, having a strange garden and apparently no friends and relatives at all, makes friend with a little girl, but their friendship must be kept secret or...

Apparently they have nothing to do with each other, but somehow they are all led to a big conspiracy, so big that the lifes of children around the world are at stake, only if they can solve the puzzle...

Am I succeeded in attracting you to read the book? I hope so. Believe me, you wouldn't regret.

I am a bit crazy last night, I finished the book "Death on the Nile" in 4 hours i.e. till 3:00 in the morning. I was too anxious of knowing who is the murderer and how the murder worked out.

I have got "The Otherland" on hand, but I have to finish 2 more books before starting.

I have bought "The Living History - Hillary Clinton" but it is still in its packing. Does any of you read it?

妳好勁呀! 可於四小時讀完本書. 最近我每天開夜車讀完了Tom Clancy's "Without Remorse", 跟住 John Grisham's "The King of Torts" 都要花三日看完. 現在開始看石頭巨著"Les Miserables", 這本要慢慢嘆. 我未睇過 Agatha Christie 的作品. 可否介紹這位女偵探小說家如何吸引. 她的作品我都有幾本, 不過冇"Death on the Nile". 好的話都要到圖書館借閱.

Hillary 本書我貪平廿零蚊買咗中文簡體版. 但中國出版商擅改原版內容, 掩耳盜鈴的手法, 另我十分氣憤, 短期內我唔會睇這本簡體版住. 要等圖書館購入英文本時我會借閱.

Well, 本"Death on the Nile" 我係圖書館借的, 其實好細本, 好似得3xx頁左右的袋狀書咁, 所以唔係好勁咋！ :-P
我諗極其量係本"The Otherland"的1/4左右。

我只是睇過Agatha Christine這一本作品, 又未睇過同類型的Detective story, 我唔敢俾太高評價。如果是一些不多睇英文小說的讀者, 我會推薦, 因為易明。其實有d似睇電視cartoon片"柯南"或"金田一"的感覺。

I am quite new to your topic but I am definitely a fans of fiction. I have a no. of favourite writers (spelling may be wrong): -

John Grisham
Michael Crichton
Sidney Sheldon
Stephen King

I also want to read Agatha Christine's series such as Dealth on the Nile. But, stupidly I bought the Chinese translation version (because cheaper) and found it extremely difficult to read as compare with original Eng version.

As for other books mentioned in this topic like the Le Mis, I watched the opera but never read the book. Is the original version in French? How do you find about the translation version. If it's good, I may try to have a look.

Any other good suggestions on other authors that I can try.

BTW, do you have any info about 2nd hand book store in HK that sells these kind of fictions? It's comment in UK and Canada, but I can't find any in HK.

歡迎你. 高興我們同屬喜歡看小說族類. 我以前多看中文小說. 近一二兩年看英文小說較多.

妳說的作家Michael Crichton和Stephen King我很少看. M.C.小說拍成的電影Congo, Jurassic Park, The Lost World 我有看過. Stephen King 的驚骸系列不大合我口味. 去年我看過 Sidney Sheldon 的 If Tomorrow Comes. 這是在網上讀者極力贊好的書. 但看後我覺得女角出獄後復仇佈局比較簡單, 書本劌力較弱, 再沒有看他的書了. John Grisham 是我喜愛的作家. 他的書我大部分看過, 但他近來的作品似乎退步了. 他的 The Brethren 我看了開頭看不下去. 新作 The King of Torts 不過不失. 比他以前的 The Firm, A Time to Kill, The Rainmaker 名著差多了.

有幾本書我覺得好看的:

Dean Koontz : The Watchers 懸疑追殺, 劇力萬鈞.
Dan Brown. : The Da Vinci Code 被殺館長的孫女追查袓父留下的宗教秘密. 但部分對宗教過份描述.
Arthur Hailey : The Final Diagnosis 以醫院為背景, 工作愛情.

至於二手書, 我在網上Amazon看見有很多舊小說賣一二元美金. 未知連郵費算不算平. 我未試過在網上訂書.
