I encountered similar problem lately. My pc could not boot up Windows XP because of crashed file(s). It was almost a diaster because I did not back up the files in my c: drive where all my daughter's pics were saved.
I called Microsoft HK for technical support and the engineer taught me how to recover my Windows XP step-by-step over the phone. I strongly suggest you to give them a call provided that your Windows is a licenced one.
